Earthquake in Chile 3 - How to help

Thank you for your interest in how Chile is coping in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.

The first emergency aid has reached the affected areas, which will be rebuilt over the next few years. Fortunately, Santiago has not been affected as much and the city is already back to normal.  Most of our students expected last week and this week have arrived without major problems; a few had minor delays. The airport is beginning to receive the majority of arrivals in the regular way.

Important tourist areas such as the Atacama desert and the Chilean "Altiplano" and northern cities haven't suffered any damage at all. Patagonia south of Temuco, with its much-visited Lake district, Chiloe island and the southernmost parts of Chile (such as Torres del Paine National Park) are also unaffected. Flights to these areas are over-booked at the moment,  as bus connections from Santiago to the south, are still complicated due to damage on the Panamericana Highway. These problems should be resolved by spring, when tourism in this area will increase again.

We appreciate that some of you might be concerned about travelling to Chile after the earthquake. However, most parts of the country are perfectly safe and enjoyable.

Many of you have asked how you can help. In short, Chile needs its tourist dollars more than ever! This way, the true rebuilding can begin in ernest.

We invite you to come to Tandem Santiago and "Learning Spanish in Chile" to contribute to this challenge. Where you study, where you stay or choose to eat, all plays an important role in helping our country to get back to normal.

At Tandem Santiago, we are doing our best to help. For the next 3 months, we are offering a 20% Discount on all Group courses at our school.

In addition, for the next 3 months we will also donate 25 USD from each paid enrolment fee to the Chilean NGO,  "Un techo para Chile" (A roof for Chile) http://www.untechoparachile.cl.  It is building vital emergency housing for those who lost their homes during the earthquake and the tsunami that followed.
